Venue: Birkbeck, University of London, London, United Kingdom

Summary

This course is designed for those who wish to enhance their skills and knowledge on offering Motivational Interviewing (MI) in their day-to-day clinical practice. Students will gain a wider spectrum of theoretical knowledge and clinical skills with regard to psycho-social aspects of hearing impairment and application of advanced evidence-based psychological skills in empowering patients through the process of audiologic rehabilitation. This course will outline the clinical application of MI in audiology.

Course highlights

By the end of this course participants should be able to:

  • Apply a wide range of basic counselling skills with a focus on empathic listening in order to build a good working alliance with patients.
  • Deliver flexible and strategic use of some core communications and counselling skills in the process of rehabilitative audiology.
  • Critically compare the conceptual framework and theoretical underpinnings of Motivational Interviewing (MI) with other psychological theories comprising: cognitive dissonance, reformulation of self-perception theory, Roger’s theory of necessary and sufficient interpersonal conditions for fostering change, and Transtheoretical model (stages of change).
  • Apply basic MI skills to improve hearing aid use and outcome.
  • Deliver audiology consultation sessions consistent with the process of MI comprising: engaging, focusing, evoking and planning.
  • Apply the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI) tool as a training/quality monitoring instrument.
  • Use MI technique of elicit-provide-elicit (EPE) when sharing information with patients.

About the Course Director:

Dr. Hashir Aazh, is an audiologist with special interest in the field of rehabilitative audiology. Over the past decade, Hashir has developed a unique approach in embracing methods of modern psychology/psychiatry in audiology practice leading to a new concept called “psycho-audiology”. Although application of psychological skills by non-psychologists in medical field is not new, most disciplines have modified psychological techniques in order to suit their own skill mix. The uniqueness of Hashir’s approach is that psychological methods have been utilised in their pure forms for the purpose of hearing rehabilitation and adjustment to hearing impairment. In the other words, Hashir’s psycho-audiology method ensures fidelity to theory and protocol of the psychological methods adopted.

Hashir completed his PhD in London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine at University of London on efficacy of Motivational Interviewing (MI) in audiology practice. The key outcomes from Hashir’s research and clinical work on MI in audiology are listed below:

  • Development of the clinical manual of “Audiologist-delivered MI for facilitating hearing aid use”.
  • Developing the protocol of Audiologist-delivered MI base on the latest guidelines of the UK’s Medical Research Council (MRC) and National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) on developing and evaluating “complex interventions”.
  • Feasibility of learning and applying MI skills, with high fidelity to MI theory and protocol, in day-to-day audiology clinics.
  • Combining MI with audiological tasks in assessment and hearing aid fitting sessions.
  • Acceptability of MI for patients and whether they find it useful.
  • Efficacy of standard audiology care combined with MI compared to the standard care only on hearing aid outcomes.
  • Mechanism and process that MI micro-skills interact with patients’ language of change and change behaviour as measured via psycholinguistic analysis and behavioural observations (i.e., hearing aid data logging).
  • The recordings of Hashir’s MI sessions focused on hearing aid use and the way that MI techniques been utilised in an audiology outpatient clinic have now been used widely in many MI and behaviour change training courses in the field of health psychology and addiction in North America & Europe.

Dr. Hashir Aazh shares his clinical methods in this masterclass on Motivational Interviewing for audiologists and provides a supportive environment for the participants in order to learn and flourish. Participants will be provided with plenty of opportunities to gain an insider view of several sophisticated psychological concepts and gain skilfulness in delivering appropriate methods in day-to-day audiology clinics while staying within their own professional boundaries and meeting the highest ethical standards.

Hashir has written over 30 scientific papers in the field of Audiology. In 2009 he was awarded the Joss Millar Shield from the British Society of Audiology.

Hashir is an Associate Editor for the International Journal of Audiology, guest Editor of Noise & Health, and reviewer for The Laryngoscope, Psychosomatic Journal, BMJ, and The New England Journal of Medicine.
